MSc in Group Psychotherapy at the Turvey Institute of Group-Analytic Psychotherapy

The Turvey Institute's MSc in Group Psychotherapy is a full clinical and academic training which takes place over 40 weekends and 4 one-week modules. The course takes place in the grounds of Turvey Abbey which offers a peaceful rural setting.

Course Description

This is a four-year part-time postgraduate course, which offers a full clinical and academic training in group psychotherapy. The course is provided by the Turvey Institute in collaboration with Oxford Brookes University, who provide academic accreditation and validation. Students are required to complete a dissertation in the year which follows the four-year programme. Successful completion of the course leads to the award of M.Sc. Group Psychotherapy. A Postgraduate Diploma Psychotherapy may be awarded in cases where students choose not to complete the dissertation but have otherwise satisfactorily completed all course requirements. For students that have successfully completed the first two years of the course and choose not to complete the four-year programme, a Postgraduate Certificate Group Psychotherapy may be awarded.

Accreditation of the Course by Professional Bodies

The course is accredited by the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) via the Universities Psychotherapy and Counselling Association (UPCA). M.Sc. and PG Diploma Group Psychotherapy graduates will be eligible for registration in the Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic Section of the UKCP.

Graduates of the M.Sc./Diploma Group Psychotherapy course will be eligible for full membership of the Institute of Group Analysis (London)

The Course is also a qualifying member of the European Group Analytic Training Institution Network (EGATIN)

Course Structure and Content

The Structure of the Course:

10 weekend blocks and a one week academic module per year at the Turvey Institute.

The timetable is as follows:

January, February, June, July, September, November, December: first weekend of the month

March and October: 2nd weekend of the month;

April: first weekend after Easter.

The academic year begins in October.

The weekends run from Friday 5pm to Sunday 3.30pm. Annual academic modules take place at the end of January over five days, prior to the February weekend block.

Content of the Course

Personal Group Analysis: students join a group-analytic psychotherapy group at Turvey, normally together with clients of the centre - there are six meetings each weekend. Over the 4 years students also participate in 20 large groups.

Theory

Theory study includes lectures and seminars on:

  • key psychoanalytic concepts
  • key group-analytic concepts
  • application of group-analytic psychotherapy
  • developmental theory
  • psychopathology
  • the individual and the group
  • the social-psychological foundations of group therapy
  • the provision of psychotherapy services
  • research methods

Practice Requirements and Supervision

Students are required to conduct two groups, one for a minimum of two years, supervised in small supervision groups during weekend blocks and in telephone conferences.

Students are also required to take on individual clients for therapy, which may be supervised locally by an approved supervisor.

Assessment

Assessment is by continuous evaluation of different elements of your work. Principally, this is by means of written assignments, case studies, a clinical paper and dissertation, and by means of reports from supervisors and therapists. Attendance of 85% is a minimum requirement.

Entry Requirements
  • This is a postgraduate course but students with sufficient relevant therapeutic experience may also apply.
  • You must have completed one of the Introductory Courses in Group Analysis recognised by the Institute of Group Analysis (London) or an equivalent introductory course. This includes the Introductory Course provided by the Turvey Centre.
  • Candidates are normally required to have had experience of analytically orientated psychotherapy prior to application.
  • For those who have insufficient psychiatric experience it will be necessary to acquire this via a voluntary placement in a psychiatric setting.
